Sony Xperia best phones of 2018
Sony is a veteran of the smartphone era. Its devices have been at the top of our best smartphone lists for years, but recently even we have been a tad disheartened at the company’s lack of design progression.
But Xperia phones can boast the latest processors and decent cameras, and this year’s Xperia XZ1 was the first non-Google phone to run Android Oreo out of the box. And hey, it might have big bezels but at least those bezels have stereo front facing speakers.

5G network report walked back by White House
On Monday, White House officials stressed that an internally circulating report from the National Security Council that proposed the nationalization of the United States’s upcoming 5G network was “dated.”
Sources told Recode that the report, first brought to Axios, was only mentioned by a senior NSC official and was not seriously being considered. The council did not respond to a request for comment.
The report suggested that the federal government either build or acquire and then own and operate the network as a bid to counter against Chinese actors, which the NSC considers a threat in the information domain. [read more]

Explorer 1, America's first satellite, launched the space race and NASA (history reminder)
The success of the fast-tracked mission, which carried the country’s first satellite into orbit, helped bring the little-known Jet Propulsion Laboratory in La Cañada Flintridge to scientific prominence and led to the creation of NASA.
“I really believe that Explorer 1 was the first landmark of space exploration,” veteran JPL engineer John Casani said in a NASA video celebrating the 50th anniversary of the launch. “Although it followed Sputnik, Explorer 1 had science instruments on it.” [read more]
